Workcover NSW - Long Distance Truck Driver Fatigue

Sunday, September 05, 2010

Long distance truck driver fatigue Fatigue is a significant health and safety risk for the 36,000 truck drivers in NSW.

WorkCover is undertaking a campaign to target fatigue in long distance trucking.

If you are involved in transporting freight long distance – whether you are a driver, employer, carrier, head carrier, consignor or consignee – you have a part to play in reducing the risks of fatigue.

WorkCover’s campaign will include:

•driver awareness days, in partnership with the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA)
•visits to businesses involved in consigning or transporting freight
•guidance materials giving practical advice on your responsibilities.

The driver awareness days will focus on helping you understand good fatigue management practices and how to recognise the signs of fatigue. Dates and locations of these days will be advertised shortly.

During workplace visits, inspectors will look at issues such as risk management practices, the development and management of driver fatigue management plans, driver training, and workers compensation and injury management systems.
