Workcover Bullying Allegations Investigated

Tuesday, September 21, 2010

The New South Wales Finance Minister Michael Daley has announced there will be an independent investigation into allegations of bullying within WorkCover NSW.

WorkCover - the body charged with stamping out workplace bullying - has confirmed it conducted an internal investigation last year.

It said the investigation found there was no evidence of bullying, but that a prolonged period of "unintentional" bullying had been occurring at its Licence Processing Unit at Gosford.

But Mr Daley says when questioned in Parliament, he had not been advised of a bullying problem.

"You can see from the questions I have answered in Parliament that my advice from WorkCover is that there has been no bullying, in contravention of the published guidelines", he said.

"And now I'm not satisfied with that, and I've asked for an independent investigation."

In June, Mr Daley announced WorkCover NSW would begin a nine-month campaign targeting bullying in the workplace.

The New South Wales Opposition spokesman for industrial relations Greg Pearce says Mr Daley needs to explain the Government's response to the findings.

"If it has been covered up, that is of even greater concern," he said.

WorkCover has issued a statement saying it takes all reports of bullying seriously and investigates them on the evidence.
