A Townsville woman in her 40s was killed yesterday by a piece of flying debris, thrown up by a nearby tractor while she was out walking.
The woman was walking on Eyre St at North Ward about 8am Wednesday when she passed a tractor that was slashing grass on a vacant block.
Police Inspector Stephen Pyne said the woman was hit in the head by a piece of flying metal and killed instantly.
"It appears that it's struck a metal pipe, which has propelled from the tractor and unfortunately struck a 40-year-old female pedestrian," Insp Pyne said.
The tractor driver was taken to hospital to be treated for shock, with school children and traffic diverted from the area.
"I haven't heard of anything like this before, it's just a tragic, tragic accident," Insp Pyne said.
"Our Forensic Crash Unit will conduct investigations alongside work cover, because it was a work related incident."
