Fishing Company Guilty Over ' Strangling' Death

Friday, July 02, 2010

A shark fishing company and a skipper have been blamed by the Industrial Court for a deckhand's death.  Jack Salvemini, 36, was working on the Jean Bryant in the Great Australian Bight in 2005 when he was strangled by a rope as a net was wound onto a spool.

A magistrate in Adelaide found Jean Bryant Fisheries and the boat's skipper Arthur Markellos failed to keep the deckhand safe.

Mr Salvemini's father, Lee, says his family has been seeking answers since the tragic accident and is happy with the conviction.

"There's not a minute in the day goes by that we don't think about him, there's not one minute goes by and I can't see it changing," he said.

"I'm getting older and I think it just hurts more as it goes on."

Sentencing submissions will be heard on a later date.
