Drilling Company Pleads Guilty - High Pressure Hose Death

Thursday, April 15, 2010

The Kalgoorlie Magistrates Court heard basic safety procedures were not adhered to.  Australian Goldfields' company, Redmond Drilling, will be sentenced next month over the death of a worker three years ago.

Ashley Opden-Akker, 19, died after he was struck by a pressure hose while working at Gindalbie Station, 50 kilometres north of Kalgoorlie, in March, 2007.

His employer at the time, Redmond Drilling, has pleaded guilty to failing to provide and maintain systems of work.

During sentencing submissions yesterday, the Kalgoorlie Magistrates Court heard basic safety procedures relating to the use of the equipment were not adhered to.

The court also heard Redmond Drilling was extremely remorseful about the incident and had suffered financially in the years since.

The company will be sentenced on May 6.
